Litmus test
Litmus paper is used to determine whether a material is acid or alkaline.
Acids normally have a sour taste and they will react with some metals to give off hydrogen gas. Alkalines usually taste bitter and feel slippery.
Carry out the litmus test to find out whether a Bramley apple is acid or alkaline.
What to do
- Press a piece of litmus paper against a slice of Bramley apple so the paper can soak up the juice
- What happens to the litmus paper? What colour does it turn?
- What does this tell you about Bramley apples?
- Test this out with other varieties of apple: do they have the same effect on the litmus paper?
- Now test with other types of fruit and vegetables.
