Apple Science Activity 4

Litmus test

Litmus paper is used to determine whether a material is acid or alkaline.
Acids normally have a sour taste and they will react with some metals to give off hydrogen gas. Alkalines usually taste bitter and feel slippery.

Carry out the litmus test to find out whether a Bramley apple is acid or alkaline.

What to do

    1. Press a piece of litmus paper against a slice of Bramley apple so the paper can soak up the juice
    2. What happens to the litmus paper? What colour does it turn?
    3. What does this tell you about Bramley apples?
    4. Test this out with other varieties of apple: do they have the same effect on the litmus paper?
    5. Now test with other types of fruit and vegetables.
