Apple Science Activity 1
Testing your taste buds
You are going to test how important your sense of taste and smell are when eating Bramley apples.
You will need
- 2 small pieces of cooked Bramley apple: left to cool
- 2 small pieces of cooked potato: left to cool
- 2 small pieces of raw onion
- A blindfold
- A friend to spoon-feed you!
What to do
- Put your blindfold on so you cannot see, hold your nose so you cannot smell!
- Ask your spoon-feeder to feed you one of the foods (without telling you which one).
- Try and guess which food you have just eaten.
- Repeat with the other foods.
- Now try eating the foods once again: this time without holding your nose.
Questions
- Were you correct in your guess each time?
- Was it easy to make out which food you were eating when you held your nose?
- Was it easier to tell which food you were eating without holding your nose?
- Why do you think this is?
